Hamper McBee "Raw Mash" DVD

Born in 1931, Hamper McBee was a Tennessee moonshiner, storyteller, balladeer, Korean War vet, carnival barker, itinerant laborer, and raconteur. He was one of the two Moonshine exhibitors at the 1982 World's Fair Folklife Festival, and a regular Moonshine exhibitor for a several years at the Internatinal Folklife Festival at the Smithsoian Museum in Washington DC. Appeared on Johnny Carson and David Letterman late night shows amoung many others.

Off and on over 30 years, Hamper grill cooked & curb hopped for our father at the "Bee Hive" Pig Joint (curb hop service), the Monteagle Diner, and the Smoke House Restaurant, all in Monteagle Tennessee. During the mid to late 50's, Hamper was a frequent folklife storyteller at the famed Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, noted for its role in the civil rights training.

A devotee of stories and traditional folk songs from his earliest days, McBee dropped out of school in the eighth grade “to work peeling Black Haw bark which we could sell for about 65 cents per pound at the time.” No kidding. Peelin’ Black Haw bark off trees. This compelling 1978 documentary profile, “Raw Mash,” follows the charismatic McBee through the set-up of a working whiskey still in the Tennessee hills, as he reflects on (and sings about) life, moonshinin’, and the drink.

Hamper tells you how to make the lick'er, and try not to get caught doin' it!
